Questions
Frequently asked questions
What TruLearn is, what it costs, how it grades, and what it cannot do yet.
- What is TruLearn?
- TruLearn is a proactive, voice-first AI teacher. Rather than waiting for a question, it arrives with a lesson plan, teaches out loud against a shared whiteboard, asks the student to explain the idea back in their own words, grades that against a rubric written by a person, and remembers what they missed for next time.
- How is TruLearn different from ChatGPT or a normal AI tutor?
- A chatbot is reactive: it answers what you ask. TruLearn decides what to teach before the student speaks, based on what they got wrong last session, what is due for review, and how long until their exam. The planning, grading and turn-taking are ordinary tested code rather than prompt instructions, so the tutor cannot talk its way around a rule and mastery is not scored against a moving target.
- Which courses does TruLearn teach?
- AP Biology is the course that is fully authored, along with a college introductory biology version of the same concept library pitched at a different depth. More subjects are being authored. Authoring is deliberately slow because each idea needs a rubric and a set of known misconceptions reviewed by a person, and that is what makes a mastery score mean anything.
- Who is TruLearn for?
- Two groups today: homeschool families who want a subject taught properly without having to prepare it themselves, and college students in introductory courses who want to find and close their gaps before an exam. The same engine serves both; only the depth and the framing differ.
- Is TruLearn free?
- Yes, TruLearn is free during the private beta. There is no pricing page and no card required. When paid plans arrive the intention is a monthly subscription costing well under one hour of human tutoring per month, and beta users will be told before anything changes.
- How do I get access to the beta?
- Create an account on the site. Places are opened a few at a time, so a new account waits until it is activated rather than starting immediately, and you get an email the moment it is. Joining the waitlist with just an email works too, but creating the account puts you in the queue properly.
- How does TruLearn grade a student?
- The student explains the concept out loud, and the explanation is checked criterion by criterion against a rubric authored and reviewed by a person for that specific concept. The model reports the evidence; deterministic code decides the score. For anything with a shape - a cycle, a structure, a graph - the student can be asked to draw it instead, and the drawing is graded against the same rubric.
- Does TruLearn work for a student who struggles with reading?
- It is voice-first, so a session is spoken rather than read, and how an idea is worded is pitched to the individual student and adjusted from evidence rather than fixed by their year group. Lexend, a typeface tuned for reading fluency and often helpful for dyslexic readers, is one of the font options, and every voice surface has a text fallback.
- Can a student interrupt the tutor?
- Yes, at any point. The app owns turn-taking rather than the model: it stops when the student starts speaking, waits while they are thinking, and cannot take a turn the app did not ask for. It is also designed to let a student wrestle with a problem before helping, because immediate rescue prevents learning.
- What does TruLearn do with student voice data?
- Audio goes directly from the browser to the speech provider and does not pass through our servers, and our provider key never reaches the browser. We do not train models on student voice data. Every authentication event is logged for security, and what was taught in a session is recorded so it can be reviewed.
- Is there a parent dashboard?
- Not yet. Coverage maps, streaks and per-session digests for parents are planned and not built. Today a parent sees how it is going by asking their child to explain what they learned, which is the same signal the product grades on.
- What can TruLearn not do yet?
- Subjects beyond biology are still being authored. It does not check written work step by step as it is being written, it does not do a student's problem sets for them, there is no parent dashboard, and there is no mobile app in the beta - it runs in a browser, and a tablet with a stylus is the best experience for the whiteboard.
